Microsoft's MAI-Image Models Beat Nano Banana & Google's Gemma 4 Fits on Laptops & Chrome 150 Lands PWA Migration & VS Code Zero-Day Steals GitHub Tokens

Microsoft unveils MAI-Image-2.5 outperforming Google's Nano Banana at image editing, Google releases Gemma 4 12B for local AI inference, Chrome 150 ships seamless PWA origin migration, and a critical VS Code zero-day allows attackers to steal GitHub tokens.

AI & ML

  • Microsoft unveiled MAI-Image-2.5 and MAI-Image-Flash at Build 2026, with the main model beating Google's Nano Banana at image editing according to Arena AI leaderboard benchmarks (OpenAI's GPT-Image-2 still leads overall). The models are available in PowerPoint, Foundry, and rolling out to OneDrive. Microsoft also released MAI-Thinking-1, a reasoning model designed for iterative complex problem-solving, plus new voice, transcription, and GitHub-optimized coding models. Read more
  • Google released Gemma 4 12B, a compact open-source model efficient enough to run on average consumer laptops, filling a gap between mobile-optimized (E2B/E4B) and heavyweight (26B/31B) variants. The model ships with Multi-Token Prediction (MTP) out of the box for better speed and efficiency by calculating possible future tokens during unused compute cycles. Read more
  • Nvidia announced RTX Spark chips combining unified memory, RTX graphics, and a new N1 CPU at Computex Taiwan, targeting local AI inference for Windows devices. The platform competes with Mac Mini's surprising AI adoption, with small-form-factor compact desktops coming soon. Read more
  • Trump's executive order requires AI developers to voluntarily submit their most capable models for 30-day government cybersecurity testing before public release. Anthropic will expand access to Mythos (a complex cybersecurity task model previously deemed too dangerous to release). The order aims to test for vulnerabilities and malicious code while protecting U.S. infrastructure and intellectual property. Read more
